Designing around Instagram Reels interface areas
Instagram Reels combines action controls along the right side with profile, caption and audio details toward the lower edge. The visible crop and surrounding interface can vary by device and entry point, which makes generous spacing more dependable than positioning content directly against a guide boundary.
These percentages describe the conservative overlay used by Display Lab, not a permanent platform specification. Interfaces can change by app version, device and account context.
Practical review checklist
- Keep logos and labels clear of the right-side action controls.
- Reserve lower-frame space for the profile, caption and audio line.
- Check that central subjects still read clearly when the interface is visible.
- Compare the Reels preview with the original 9:16 master before export.
Design tip
Treat the center as the primary storytelling area and use the outer edges for background, texture or other information that can tolerate partial obstruction.
